Why Is My Oven Not Heating?

An oven that won't reach temperature — or takes far longer than usual to preheat — is one of the more disruptive appliance failures, since it affects nearly every meal that involves baking or roasting. The likely cause depends on whether you have an electric or gas oven.

Electric ovens

The bake element (bottom) and broil element (top) are the two most common failure points on an electric oven. A visibly damaged, blistered, or split element is often an easy visual confirmation, but a failed element doesn't always look obviously broken — testing is sometimes needed.

Gas ovens

On a gas oven, the igniter plays a similar role to the heating element — it has to glow hot enough to draw enough current to open the safety valve and allow gas to flow. A weakening igniter can eventually fail to open the valve at all, leaving the oven unable to heat.

When it's a sensor, not a heat source

Sometimes an oven does heat, but inaccurately — running hotter or cooler than the set temperature, or unevenly across racks. This points more toward the temperature sensor or, on convection ovens, the fan responsible for circulating air. These issues are easy to mistake for cooking technique problems when they're actually mechanical.

What to do next

If your oven in Bend isn't heating, note any error codes displayed and whether the issue affects bake, broil, or both — that detail alone often narrows down the likely component before a technician even arrives.
